The meaning of the Xhosa word Istabane is I am gay. In the age of ultimate individualism, it's easy to underestimate the power of community. Daniela Müller-Brunke returned to the semi-desert grasslands of South Africa, to document the life of queer people in an often hostile environment.
Her pictures show the rarely-seen reality of queer folks in South Africa, opening a door to a beautiful, strong community of people daring to be themselves and face their struggles together.
Daniela Müller-Brunke grew up in Africa. Her connection to this world can often be seen in her work. After her studies at the Nelson Mandela University in South Africa, she moved to London and assisted high-profile photographers. While starting her career as a photographer she began teaching fashion photography at the Istituto Marangoni in London. She now lives in Berlin working as a fashion and portrait photographer. She regularly spends long periods of time in Africa to work and see her family.
